Artist and curator Lea Nickless works in Miami, surrounded by lush sub-tropical flora, explosive color and energy, and the calming force of water. She has always been drawn to the natural world and in recent years has experimented with creating pattern and color on fabric using only materials that occur in nature, most of which she gathers on daily walks.
Seeds, leaves and blossoms are wrapped in silk and steeped in a dye bath of similar ingredients. The bundles are then allowed to sit and process for several days allowing for a kind of botanical alchemy to take place. Unwrapping the bundles never fails to thrill as the unexpected effects reveal themselves.
